The Mary Lane fig (also known as "Jelly Fig") is a highly praised California-born variety famous for its exceptionally sweet honey, agave, and light vanilla flavor profile. Because it is nearly seedless, it lacks the crunchy texture of standard varieties, resulting in an incredibly smooth, juicy, and jelly-like amber pulp.

Fruit Appearance & Texture

  • Skin: Bright greenish-yellow to golden-yellow when fully mature.
  • Interior: Translucent amber to golden-yellow pulp (though a few variants can exhibit a strawberry-colored hue).Texture: Highly gelatinous, melt-in-your-mouth texture due to the distinct lack of seed crunch.
  • Sugar Spots: The skin often develops brown "sugar spots" and a drop of syrupy honey from its eye when perfectly ripe.

Tree Characteristics & Growth

  • Size & Habit: Upright, fast-growing tree that stays naturally less bushy than other varieties, making it ideal for tight garden spaces.
  • Leaves: Distinctive, mostly 5-lobed leaves with wavy margins.
  • Pollination: A "Common" type fig that is completely self-fertile and does not require pollination from a fig wasp to bear fruit.
  • Eye Type: Features a tightly closed eye, making the fruit highly resistant to splitting, rain damage, and souring bugs.

Climate & Ripening

  • Hardiness: Highly adaptable and cold hardy down to USDA Zones 7–9 (approximately 0°F to 5°F with protection).
  • Seasonality: It is a mid-to-late season ripener (typically late August through September). It performs beautifully in its native warm California climate but is reliable enough to mature before the frost in cooler regions like the Pacific Northwest.
