The small to medium fruits feature deep purple-to-black skin and a jammy, dark strawberry-red interior. Its taste is frequently described as a syrupy mix of plum, dates, and dark molasses.

Key Characteristics

  • Flavor Profile: Belongs to the "Bordeaux" taste group, offering a rich, winey, and intensely sweet berry taste with a nearly smoky or molasses-like undertone.

  • Ripening Time: Exceptionally early, making it ideal for growers in regions with short summers or rainy autumns. It begins to ripen in late July to mid-August.

  • Tree Vigor & Productivity: Highly productive and resilient . The tree can produce fruit on nearly every node and will reliably fruit even if it experiences winter dieback .

  • Hardiness: Hardy to between 0° and 5° F, requiring winter protection in areas colder than USDA Zone 7.

  • Rain & Split Resistance: While the variety has decent spoilage resistance in humid conditions, its round shape can make the fruit prone to splitting if it receives too much water right before harvest.
