DSJG (short for Del Sen Jaume Gran) is a prized, self-fertile, and vigorous mid-to-late season fig variety originating from the Balearic Islands of Spain. Highly regarded by collectors, it is famous for its large size, intense strawberry jam flavor, and syrupy, jammy texture.

Flavor & Fruit Profile

  • Flavor: Intense berry. It is widely described as tasting like all-natural strawberry jam with a balanced sweetness. Some growers compare its rich flavor and sweetness to premium varieties like I-258 or Black Madeira.
  • Texture: Dense, heavy, syrupy, and jammy with a mild and pleasant seed crunch. It often drips with "fig honey" from its eye.
  • Appearance: Large to extra-large squat fruits with a yellowish-green or green skin, sometimes blushed with subtle purple striations depending on sun exposure. The interior features a striking, deep red to crimson pulp.

Tree & Growing Habits

  • Type: Common fig (self-fertile, does NOT require the Blastophaga psenes wasp to fruit).
  • Vigor: It is a vigorous, fast grower.
  • Season: Mid-to-late season. Because it takes its time to develop deep sugars, it requires a long, warm growing season.
  • Climate considerations: While rated by some sources as resistant to rain, it can be prone to splitting in regions with excessive late-season rainfall and high humidity. In colder regions (like Zone 7), growers often successfully fruit this variety by keeping it in containers and using a greenhouse to give it a head start in the spring.
