Hâtive d'Argenteuil (often called HdA) is an exquisite French fig known for its complex, gourmet flavor profile. It features a sweet and highly concentrated lemony-berry and cherry flavor balanced by a refreshing tart acidity. The texture is incredibly thick, jammy, and syrupy.

Flavor Profile

  • Primary Notes: Intense cherry, mixed berry, and subtle tropical undertones like pineapple.
  • Complexity: Often described as one of the most complex figs you can grow, featuring a "lemony honey-berry" taste. The sweetness is perfectly offset by good acidity.
  • Texture: The pulp is a vibrant, bright red and extremely juicy. The skin is thin, tender, and uniquely sweet.
  • Hang Time: The figs can be left on the tree to concentrate their sugars further without easily souring or spoiling.

Key Tree Information

  • Origin: Historically from a suburb of Paris, France (Argenteuil). It is sometimes found under the name Native d'Argenteuil due to a historical typo at UC Davis.
  • Hardiness: Hardy down to 0° to 5°F. It is unifera (produces a single main crop rather than a breba crop).
  • Climate Performance: It is highly praised for humid climates because the skins resist splitting and heavy rain. It also performs beautifully in short-summer or cool-season climates because it ripens its main crop relatively early.
