The Longue d’Août Fig (French for “Long of August”), also called the Fig Banana or sometimes Jolly Green Giant, is an old French variety that’s been grown in Europe for centuries and has made its way into North American collections.

 

General Profile

  • Skin: Green to yellow-green when ripe.

  • Flesh: Amber to light strawberry-colored.

  • Flavor: Sweet with mild berry/honey notes — not as intensely sugary as Italian Honey, but more complex than Kadota.

  • Size: Medium to large fruit, elongated or “banana-like” in shape (hence the nickname).

 

Growth Habits

  • Tree Size: Vigorous grower; can reach 12–15+ feet if not pruned.

  • Hardiness: Generally hardy to USDA Zone 7, sometimes grown in Zone 6 with protection.

  • Production:

    • Produces a breba crop in early summer (on last year’s wood).

    • A main crop ripens in late summer through early fall (August into September).

  • Pollination: Self-pollinating.
