The Makedonia Dark is a highly productive, cold-hardy fig variety originally from the Macedonian border region of Greece. It features a dark purple to nearly black skin and amber to deep red pulp.

  • Flavor: Moderately sweet with rich, complex notes of dark berries (like cherry and strawberry).
  • Texture: Smooth, jammy interior with an extremely thin skin that practically melts in your mouth.
  • Usage: Excellent for fresh eating, drying, or making preserves.

  • Origin: Brought to Pennsylvania by an immigrant from Macedonia 
  • Hardiness: Highly cold-tolerant (typically suited for Zones 7–8, potentially 6 and always in pots)
  • Ripening: Early-ripening, making it an excellent choice for northern climates with shorter growing seasons.
  • Growth: Similar to the Mt. Etna / Hardy Chicago types—vigorous and dependable.
